Julian Waters – Festival of Capitals

22 – 27 July and 29 July – 3 Aug
Abbey Seuilly (near Chinon), France
“The study of classical Roman inscriptional capitals is invaluable for any calligrapher or graphic designer. But to translate the subtle carved forms, with their delicate bracketed serifs, which originated from the flat brush, into equally beautiful letters made with a broad-edged pen, can be difficult and daunting. We all aspire to create beautiful Roman Caps, but there are also other less formal kinds of capitals that are easier to write and fun to make, offering many expressive and textural possibilities. We will explore several kinds of freer capitals, including friendly ‘running’ caps and those that can build textures of letters woven together, stroke by stroke, line by line”. J Waters
